1.4.2.2 Heat Stress: Heat stress is a serious concern. Heat stress monitoring should be conducted by the Zone Contractor ES&H manager, or designee, if warranted by hot weather conditions. Monitoring will be based upon approved modified Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) values (see Tables 4a and 4b). The WBGT monitoring will be used as a guide for determining work/rest regimes in hot weather. Personnel will be briefed on how to identify the various stages of heat-induced illness (heat stress, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke) during the Daily Safety Meetings, when appropriate. Note that the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) can accelerate the effects of heat stress and workers who may already be ill can also feel the effects quicker than others. Work breaks will be taken as needed and plenty of fluids will be available on site. The Zone Superintendent (or designee) and/or the DDC/Site ES&H officer will observe site conditions and monitor weather forecasts to determine if work activities are to be altered or suspended.
