Greenwich to Bdway between chambers and Murray

Cleanup work was completed on 9/26/01 at OSOOhours in the area from Greenwich to Broadway, between Chambers and Murray. DECON checkpoint on church and chambers has been moved from Murray and church in an effort to reduce loading of air samples from construction vehicles. OEM requested to move construction traffic through Broadway and chambers. Advised that Construction company is responsible to insure no emissions from vehicles occur. At minimum, all loads must be substantial wet down, covered with tarps, and vehicles washed. New perimeter was moved from chambers to murray between Greenwich and Broadway. Air monitoring was conducted in this area to maintain clearance levels. Four air samples were taken in the proposed area each day. All four samples passed clearance level. These results were as follows:

First Response

DEP haz mat first response request from the FDNY forward command post for suspected exposure of benzene at ground zero during the early morning on 9/29/01. Readings were detected with the Foxboro FID/PID. The highest levels detected on the FID were 210 increments in one localized area on level D in the Verizon Building. Advised to were organic respirators and notify there safety personnel. The daily ground zero monitoring for dangerous gases showed normal background levels.

Future Progress

DERTA has surveyed other areas inside the perimeter in an effort to target potential sites to be opened. DERTA does not believe that it will be possible to clear any other areas
