Commissioner WTC Update for 9/24 -25/01 Activities

Battery Park City

South Battery Park areas are still in the cleanup stage. These areas include rector Place Park and playground, various streets and sidewalks, and the promenade. Problems deaning playground at rector street because of clogged drain have been working hard to get it resolved with no avail.

As you know. Battery Park City has now changed their mind and have requested we dean many more areas which would require a minimum of lOdays remmediation. This new work indudes areas in North Battery Park, South Battery Park and the cove area between them. It must be clearly explained to Battery Park executives that even with our TUiiinitely are responsible to ensure their help they still have areas they must clean and uhi properties are safe for residents and visitors. There are many areas which are inexcessible by EPA and DEP contractors which they have to address. For instance there are roof tops, open garages. Alcoves, and outside equipment (i.e. UVAC etc). We will continue to assist Battery Park City where we can.

Battery Park Conservancy manager. Bob Serpico indicated on 9/22/01 that he would secure the park at the North Battery Park area until they could conduct samples for clearance. Thepark was not secured as of2200 hours on 9/23/01. Various areas along the promenade from vessey street all the way to just south of 1* place remain contaminated. We have prioritized the streets and sidewalk areas followed by the playground and vehicles and lastly the promenade since the Battery Park Conservancy indicated they would handle it. Battery Park Conservancy has complained about cleanup contractors being to rough with their trees. DERTA advised them to give a list of sensitive areas they would like us not to clean and we will remove them from our list of areas. We advised them it is still there responsibility to ensure it is clean for there residents and public.
