New York, NY, August 25,2003 - Council Member Alan Jay Gerson cites recent revelations by the EPA inspector General about misinformation given to New Yorkers about the air quality following 9/11 as confirmation of the fears expressed all along by his constituents in Lower Manhattan. Gerson had assailed the initial study as scientifically flawed, and introduced legislation following the EPA’s cleanup efforts to require scientifically significant air sampling in all areas under the plume. The EPA study used “grab samples” of dust rather than an adequate testing of ambient air, and left out significant areas under the plume such as the Lower East Side and Brooklyn Heights.
“The recent report by the EPA Inspector General confirms what many downtown residents experienced and feared,” said Gerson. “It’s a sad day for our city and for our country when citizens cannot count on the EPA to be an objective, scientific guardian of their environment and health. It is especially egregious when political leaders would sooner take a chance at putting people’s health at risk by downplaying potential risks rather than trust citizens with the truth.”
