Re: EPA building testing and cleaning program

Dear Ms. Kenny, Mr. Ward and Mr. Picciano:

At our October 15th monthly meeting Community Board #1 adopted the attached resolution outlining our recommendations for improving the programs now underway to clean and monitor the interior and exterior of Lower Manhattan buildings following the September 1 f’’ attack. Clearly many local residents continue to be very concerned with the health impacts of September 11‘" when an unpreceded mix of pollutants and contaminates entered our atmosphere. The fires that burned for months on the site created additional health concerns. While we are pleased that the EPA and DEP have taken on additional responsibility to insure that the area is safe and clean we believe that the program is failing to address many of the critical concerns of our residents. For example we believe that EPA must also test for mercury, lead and other toxins and expand the program so that a range of public spaces and facilities as well as small businesses are tested and cleaned.
