RE: MO2A-02-08/IMPROVEMENTS TO EMERGENCY ITS OF PARK AVENUE RAILROAD TUNNEL AT 59th & 86th STREETS Transmittal of Final Drawings and Request for Concurrence in Design of Improvements for 59th Street Emergency Exits

Dear Mr. Novotny: In response to your April 18, 1984 correspondence to our design consultant, LeRoy Callender/P.C., please find enclosed three (3) sets of final drawings on the construction of the above-referenced improvements for your review and information. In particular, please direct your attention to Sheets 3, 4, 5 and 9, which depict our plans for the improvements to the 59th Street emergency exits. In a February 29, 1984 submittal to your office, our consultant preposed schemes that included new column footings located close to the tops of two existing brick-lined sewers at the 59th Street emergency exits. After reviewing said submittal, your office reccanmended that "...the column loads be transmitted to the subgrade of the sewer through seme type of a load-transfer mechanism..." Together with our consultant, we have investigated and developed a design alternative that has been incorporated into the enclosed final drawings. This alternative abandons the previous scheme of introducing new columns and footings and rather, places new and stronger beams/girders above with the removal of existing columns. This will give us the necessary headroom and other clearances, support ceiling loads adequately and eliminate the problem of disturbing the existing sewers. We will soon be advertising this project for bids and expect work to be completed by September 1985. If we do not hear from your office within the next two (2) weeks, we will presume that the alternative presented in the final drawings is satisfactory. qca3
