South Battery Park areas are still in the cleanup stage. These areas include rector Place Park and playgroimd, various streets and sidewalks, and the promenade.

Battery Park Conservancy manager, Bob Serpico indicated on 9/22/01 that he would secure the park at the North Battery Park area until they could conduct samples for clearance. The park was not secured as of2200 hours on 9/23/01. Various areas along the promenade from vessey street all the way to just south of 1“ place remain contaminated. We have prioritized the streets and sidewalk areas followed by the playground and vehicles and lastly the promenade since the Battery Park Conservancy indicated they would handle it.

Cleanup work continues to be conducted in the area from Greenwich to Broadway, between Chambers and Murray. Air monitoring was conducted in this area in an effort to move the site perimeter from chambers to murray. Four air samples were taken in the proposed area. Two samples were found to be borderline at the clearance criteria of .01 fibers/cc. One sample was found to be above the criteria. The remaining sample was found to be below the cleanup criteria. These results were as follows:

Sample results indicate the need to continue to remediate the contamination and perform additional sampling for clearance. If after additional cleanup the sampling results are substantially lower than the criteria of .01 fibers/cc we should move to shrink the chambers street perimeter if the other environmental agencies are in agreement. Otherwise we would need to conduct additional air monitoring and cleaning until we achieve this goal.

On 9/24/01 we will continue outdoor remediation of the proposed area and believe it will be completed sometime on Tuesday afternoon. We have still not seen the vehicle advisory as promised from DOH.

At 2200 hours DERTA was requested by FDNY to report to the forward command center to evaluate a condition in the verizon building. DERTA determined the gas odor was hydrogen sulfide caused by fill decay or sewer gas in the basement of the verizon building. This condition was then referred to the verizon safety personnel.
