Currently DEP’s HazMat Unit in conjunction with US EPA are using HazMat Field Survey instruments to monitor for classes of chemicals that may be emitted from the site. In addition, these instruments are monitoring for explosive atmospheres in and around the site. This is standard HazMat protocol for possible contaminated sites. Today is the first chance that HazMat and US EPA were able to conduct this joint effort because the level of particulates in the ambiant air has subsided. (Particulates skew the reading of the instruments.)
