Commissioner WTC Update for 9/28-29

Battery Park City

South Battery Park areas are still in the cleanup stage. These areas include various streets and sidewalks, parking lots, ball fields and the promenade. Scheduled to begin early morning on 9/29/01 on list provided by Battery Park City.

North Battery Park City work is scheduled for Monday to begin cleaning the playground area. This includes removal of sand from a large area. The work was delayed at the request of the Battery Park Conservancy so that they could have new sand to replace the sand we remove. Playground area was still not secured and we continue to recommend J* that it be cleaned up immediately. Currently, it is scheduled to begin on Monday night at there insistence.

Cleanup also continues on the north cove area near the marina.

Completed inspections of roof tops of buildings. Cleanup work will entail extensive rigging and use of vac trucks. Discussed plan of action and whether this is something we want to undertake with EPA. Timeframe to complete will be extensive. Still waiting for EPA decision.

375 South end ave Lefrak building

Courtyard cleanup complete. Work on facade of gateway plaza tower(600) continues into Saturday. Residents should not be allowed in without protection until facade debri is removed from gateway tower. Lefrak was also notified that garage facade and inside areas must be cleaned otherwise they will spread contamination in the immediate area.. DOH allowed residents to obtain items from there apartments last night as long as they wore respiratory protection and took special precautions. Air monitoring results for courtyard area passed clearance. However, areas on south end ave north of Albany st did not pass. Therefore residents of 375 south end ave and other buildings in the complex can only enter through the rear courtyard via the promenade.

4 Financial Center

Inspection of building revealed contamination of lobby areas, resturant and several bars. Some windows blown out on facade facing south. Will put outside areas on list for cleanup as priority. Building owner responsible for inside all inside areas facade and roof top.
