The city has estimated that there are 15,000 apartments south of Canal Street, Mears said. Cleaning an 800-square-foot studio could cost $1,000, a price tag that could triple or quadruple if asbestos were detected and required abatement, said Damon Gersh, owner of Maxons Restorations, which employed about 1,500 cleaners downtown after Sept. 11. The city Environmental Protection Department also will clean the interiors and exteriors of 10 to 20 buildings that have remained unoccupied immediately around ground zero, Mears said. The department will seek reimbursement from owners' insurance companies, she said. Copyright 2002 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
