NYC 9/11 Public Portal Document

DEP Fax 718 595 3557 Aug 15 2000 17:11 P.06

DEP personnel responded and were on location at 2:05 p.m and found Con Edison had removed the pavement over a 25 X 15 X 3 foot deep void along the north curb line of West 110`" Street. NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) and OEM were on location and had secured the area around the void. It was determined that a leak on the 12 inch water main in the north side of I10°i Street had infiltrated the sewer on that side of the street creating the void. The sewer and water main are being evaluated to determine the extent of damage and method of repair. During the evaluation DEP Staff found that a contractor working on a nearby sidewalk disposed of the rubble from the old sidewalk into a nearby manhole. We arc investigating with DOT to find the contractor.

Sewer Collapse - East 33rd Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues; Manhattan The emergency repair contractor has completed replacing the 110 linear feet of twelve inch ductile iron water main that was compromised when a section of 5 X 4 foot elliptical sewer collapsed. Reconstruction of the collapsed section of sewer is underway. Approximately one hundred feet of sewer will be replaced. Reconstruction of the sewer and roadway in East 33rd Street will take an additional four to six weeks.

West 58th Street & Riverside Drive, Manhattan On August 3, 2000, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation requested Department of Environmental Protection assistance in investigating the source of an on-going NYCDEC remediation project in the vicinity of W. 158th Street and Riverside Drive. We are presently investigating the origin of an oil-water mixture flowing through a 5' x 6' sewer which does not appear on our records and which we believe to be abandoned, Our present course of action is to clean and televise the sewer, as well as perform dye-testing in mapped sewers and buildings in the surrounding area in order to discover and subsequently terminate the flow through this sewer.

Interagency Matters

Meeting with ,parks Department to Broaden use of Biosold Based Compost DEP recently met with landscape and design representatives of the Department of Parks and Recreation. The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss revisions to DPR draft specifications on the use of compost on park properties. A revision would permit the inclusion of Class A compost produced from City biosolids by a DEP contractor. We addressed the concerns expressed by DPR, and answered their many questions. We consider this a productive meeting, as adding City compost to the specifications will go a long way towards the expansion and general acceptance of the use of beneficial biosolids within the City itself, and will be a signal as to the high quality of our biosolids products.
