Available Water Resources in the Event of a Delaware Aqueduct Shutdown:

The 2-billion gallon usage figure referred to by Comm. Miele includes up to 800 mgd that flows directly from the Cannonsville, Pepacton & Neversink Reservoirs to tributaries of the Delaware River the West Branch, East Branch and Neversink, respectively, per the Supreme Court decree. This water does not travel in the Delaware Aqueduct.

Upstate communities, which withdraw about 125 mgd, have alternate sources. They would be notified to use those alternate sources.

In-City usage is about 1.2 bgd. Obviously, this amount can be reduced substantially through the conservation measures we would normally take in a Drought Emergency.

As of 11/01/00, the available capacity in the: • Catskill System = over 116 bg and the Croton System = over 76 bg for a total of 192 bg, or 160 days supply at normal usage without factoring in replenishment by precipitation. (The Croton System, presently undergoing maintenance work, can be restored to full operation within 48 hours.) • Kensico Reservoir = 30.6 bg or over 25-day supply

The Catskill System can provide 500 mgd; the Croton 275 mgd.

Additionally, the following sources can be tapped without adding infrastructure:

60 mgd pumped from Croton Falls Reservoir 60 mgd from DEP's Jamaica Water Supply 20 mgd from the Jamaica System section under Nassau County ownership.
