The methodology utilized for the asbestos air samples collected at the conclusion
of the cleaning operation involved drawing a known volume of air through a
porous, mixed cellulose ester filter with a 0.45 micron diameter pore size. The
particles on the filter were then analyzed using Transmission Electron
Microscopy (TEM) techniques to determine the type and concentration of
airborne asbestos fibers from the selected sampling locations. Federal
regulations (AHERA) pertaining to acceptable levels of airborne asbestos
concentrations for the purpose of re-occupying a school where asbestos
activities have been conducted have been set at a fiber density of 70 structures
per square millimeter within the sample. This criterion is being utilized by the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to report airborne asbestos in the area of
the World Trade Center collapse.
All but one of the forty (40) asbestos air samples collected had no asbestos
structures detected. One sample had a reported fiber density of 16.7 structures
per square millimeter, well below the re-occupancy criterion.
Air monitoring results are in Appendix 2.
Additionally, two lead wipes were taken in the areas that previously had higher
lead levels. The analytical results of these samples will be known within two
days. A separate report will be written when these results are received.
4.0 CONCLUSIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS
• A visual inspection was made of all cleaned units and cleaned common
areas. Visible dust was not apparent. A Certification was issued for all of
these areas.
• Air monitoring was conducted. A total of forty (40) air samples were
collected and analyzed for asbestos. All samples were below the criterion
of 70 structures per square millimeter.
• Based upon the visible inspections and air monitoring results, it is felt that
this building can be re-occupied.
