Dear Mr. Bemiart:
Following the collapse of the World Trade Centers and associated properties, BMS was retained
by your office to perform baseline sampling within the budding to determine if airborne
asbestos
was presient.
EMS of NY tested representative floors 0 detailed in the anlaytical results
enclosed sad
subjected the samples to analysis via Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). TEM analysis
is deemed state of the art and is able to distinguish between asbestos and non-asbestos fibers. It
is important to note that during the testing, the building was operating under normal occupancy
exposure,
The results that were obtained indicated that at the time of testing no asbestos fibers were
detected, in the air samples collected However, non-asbestos structures — gypsom and cellulose
components of sheetrock, were present.
Current acceptable levels as set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency are act at 70
slmrr2. The standard of 70 almns3 is used to determine whetter background" levels or airborrne
levels following an abatement project am acceptable for human occupancy. If the concentration
exceed 1.0 s/mms, then additional testing along with clean-up and possible protective equipment
should be initiated for precautionary purposes.
Overall, based upon the sampling results, the air quality in regards to asbestos, according to EPA
standards, is acceptable.
