RE: Park Avenue Emergenvy Tunnel Exits at 59th Street, Borough of Manhattan

Dear Mr. Callender:

This will confirm the discussion held March 27, 1983 between Mr. Andrew Mireku of your staff and Mr. Michael Nagy, Engineering Review Section and Mr. Nagy's subsequent discussion with you on April 9, relative to new column supports in the two Emergency Exit structures.

As you know, the new column footings as proposed in your plan submission of February 29, 1984 are extremely close to the tops of the two existing sewers.

It was our recommendation that the column loads be transmitted to the subgrade of the sewer(s) through some sort of a load transfer mechanism e.g. grade beams, etc.

This recommendation was also.discussed with Mr. Frank Flores of Metro North.

It is our understanding that you are now investigating design alternatives along these lines.

Therefore, our review of this project will continue upon receipt of three (3) sets of plans revised pursuant to the above. Your submission should include longitudinal and cross section views showing the sewer(s) in re lation to the proposed work.

We have arranged for our Maintenance Engineering Unit to conduct an interior inspection of both sewers in the near future.

' i:"- Very truly yours.

S' FREDERICK NOVOTNY, P.E., CHIEF Div. of Sewer Regulation & Control, Bureau of Sewers
