B. MATERIAL CLASSIFICATION 1. For purposes of disposal only, excavated material shall be classified as follews;

a. Recent fill (F-2) - Recent fill is primarily a fine relatively uniform sized sand hydraulj.cally placed for the construction of the Battery Park City landfill. Slight mixing or interbedding of the sand and the underlying organics at their interface, provided that the silt is not more than 10 percent of the wlume will be classified as recent fill with the approval of the Foundation Engineer. b. Miscellaneous unsuitable (F-1) Miscellaneous unsuitable shall be wood, all inetal or timbers exceeding one cubic foot in volume, and pieces cf rock or concrete exceeding two feet in maxim’.TO dimension or four square feet, in area. Plastic and metal debris and soil with more than 10% fines shall also be miscellanec;us unsuitable.

III. A. EXCAVATION - SOIL

1. Ml materials within the boundaries of the Work shall be ■ removed to the excavation subgrades indicated on the drawings. 2. Backfill, grade and conpa'Ct all areas and volumes excavated beyond the limits shavn on tlae drawings with recent fill. B. TEMPORARY SHEEl.’H'JG

1. The chan.ges in subgrade levels shall be supported by suitable sheet piling or sheeting held in place by soldier 'oeams, braces, shores or wales. 2. Timber and steel used for the sheetbrg system may be either new or used, but must, in all cases, be sound, free from defects and suitable for its intended use. 3. Tenporary' sheeting shall be maintained by the Subcontractor until acceptence of. Vis Wbrk by the . Contractors Representative. C. DEWATERING

1. It shall be tlie rasponsibilii-.y of this Subcontractor to control and maintain water levels iii the excavations so that all excavation will be don in the dry. The water level .in the excavation shall at all times be a mini.mum of 2 feet below the deepest excavation. Softening of the bottcn will not be allowed. Subcontractor shall maintain and operate the dewater syston until acceptance of the Work by the Contractor. D. BACKFILL
