2.6 VEHICLE WASHING STATION
The USEPA and USCG have developed and implemented a mandatory vehicle-washing program to remove site-derived dust from vehicles leaving the landfill. This task was undertaken to minimize transport of site-derived material off-site. A majority of the workforce is transported to the site via buses. The buses make several trips depending on the size of the work-shift and are washed at the Transportation Authority (TA) garage. Site command and management personnel are parking vehicles in non-regulated areas. A vehicle wash station (VWS) has been established approximately 200-feet from the roadway leading up to the processing area of the landfill. Hay bails will be used to minimize migration of water into the other lane of the road. During periods of cold weather, commercially available products will be used to minimize the formation of the ice on the roadway surface. This operation will be maintained on a 24-hour basis. Vehicles that have transported debris associated with this operation exiting the landfill should use this facility prior to leaving the landfill. Modification to the VWS may be necessary at some time in the future to accommodate additional vehicular traffic.
