I. BUILDING RELATED ISSUES A. Landlords/Enforcement

• How do I know my landlord had the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system properly cleaned? This information should be on file with DEP. You can request information on whether cleanup has occurred in your building.

• Are there written protocols as to how to clean HVAC systems? ????? Only guidelines about making sure that dust is contained and that a HEPA vac be used [need to check with DEP]

• What can I do about buildings that have not been cleaned yet (roofs, window sills, fire escapes, lobbies, hallways)? What agency enforces building cleaning? ????? Call DEP and they will see if the address is in their file and whether there is any indication that the LL has cleaned [need to check with DEP]

• My landlord had the building cleaned back in September but he has not done anything since, who can I call to make sure he continues to clean? A new Fact Sheet on cleaning procedures has been issued by DOH, DEP, MOEC. This provides guidance (???) to landlords regarding continual cleaning [need to know if this is approved and ready for publication]

• Terraces & balconies: Who is responsible for cleaning? Is it safe to clean the terrace if there is a lot of dust? What can I do if cleaned my terrace but others in my building have not and the dust blows into my apartment? DEP has determined that light coating of dust can be cleaned using wet methods and/or HEPa vacuums. Large accumulations (completely covered or blanketed) of debris inside or outside should be cleaned by a certified asbestos investigator. An N-95 type dust mask is recommended for use during routine home cleaning
