IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES IN THE
LOWER MANHATTAN AREA
Con Edison has worked hard to restore electric service to your premises. We appreciate your patience
during this time but we need your further cooperation. Our immediate goal is to provide at least
temporary service for ail affected customers, and it may be some time before permanent repairs can be
completed. It is imperative that all customers make every effort to conserve electricity in their homes or
businesses so that these temporary repairs will not be overburdened. Here are some practical and
inexpensive ways to reduce your electricity usage and help in this effort.
LIGHTING
• Use only essential lighting. Where possible, replace incandescent bulbs with lower-wattage
energy efficient bulbs.
• Turn off incandescent lights when you leave the room. Only turn off fluorescent lights if they will
not be needed for longer than 15 minutes—they use as much energy to restart as they do to
remain lit for 15 minutes.
COOLING AND HEATING
• Use air conditioning only if necessary for your health.
• Close drapes or blinds to keep your rooms cooler.
• If space cooling is needed, try using a room fan which uses much less electricity than even the
most efficient air conditioner.
• Use electric heat sparingly.
• Avoid running hot water. Fill the basin, rinse dishes in cold water, take a quick shower. Use
lower temperature settings if you have that control.
APPLIANCES
• Set your refrigerator temperature control to an acceptable setting. Ideally, your refrigerator
temperature should be between 36 and 38 degrees, but 40 to 42 degrees will keep food fresh.
• Using cool water settings when you do laundry will save on the electricity used to heat water.
Try to do fewer large loads instead of several small loads.
• Only run the dishwasher for a full load. Use the energy saving setting available on most
dishwashers. Open the dishwasher after the final rinse cycle and let the dishes air dry.
• Use the microwave instead of the electric stove or oven.
• Put away the hairdryer, lighted mirror, and electric toothbrush for the time being.
• Limit television and computer usage.
SET AN EXAMPLE
• Talk to your family members and neighbors about these energy-conserving measures.
