I am pleased to report that the daughters of two DEP employees were given the Hundred Year Association of New York's 2000 College Award including the premier award for this class. The scholarships will be used to further the college studies of the two young ladies, and the Agency as well as the fathers are justifiably proud.

Reservoir Operations Jerome Reservoir - With the successful completion of the Delaware Aqueduct shutdown, the draining of Jerome Reservoir's north basin was initiated on December 12, 2000. The basin is being drained for cleaning purposes and to allow the Bureau of Environmental Engineering's contractor to perform test borings in connection with the new Croton Treatment Plant. The basin is being drained at the rate of 10 MGD with the consent of the Bureau of Clean Water. The landscaping contractor began cleaning grass and brush from around the reservoir on December 6, 2000.

Central Park Reservoir - filling of the last two (2) feet of the Central Park Reservoir began on Monday evening, December 18, 2000.

Distribution Capital projects for new water mains were initiated and sent to the Capital Planning Division for the following: - water quality improvements in Prospect Avenue, etc. in Brooklyn - new building sites at one location in Staten Island - replacement of old unlined mains at three locations in Brooklyn.

Brooklyn - On December 8,2000 a high pressure alarm was received at 3 a.m. from the north line regulator at Shaft 22. The shaft regulator was found to be working normally. The regulator machinist checked the regulators in the area outside of Shaft 22 the following day, high flow conditions (day time), and did not uncover a problem. Additional investigation will be performed to check the malfunctioning regulator during low flow conditions (night time). On December 16, 2000, the high alarm setting was raised to 75 psi at Shaft 22 which was reflecting the higher pressure generated outside the Shaft.

Local Law 65/96 Notifications and Notices of Violations (NOV); Citywide - Update On December 8, 2000, DEP personnel shut the tap supplying water to 102-28 164" Avenue in Queens for their failure to comply with a directive to connect their premises to a sewer fronting the building. Additionally, a tap supplying water to 99-57 164'' Avenue was to be shut for non- compliance to connection orders; however, it was found to have been previously shut due to a leak. Meeting with the Department of Parks and Recreation - Re: Sewer Connection Requirements On Friday, December 15, 2000, DEP staff met with NYC Dept of Parks and Recreation (DPR) to discuss sewer connection requirements for DPR concession facilities. At the meeting, it was agreed between all parties that DEP will assist DPR in identifying those facilities and other Parks properties which will require connection to sewers.
