This Department's Leak Detection Unit will investigate to determine the exact locationof the break. However, because the shutdown of the water main is not affecting consumers at this time, excavation to repair the water main will not commence until after the holiday embargo.

20 Inch Water Main Break - Intersection of Foster and Nostrand Avenues; Brooklyn On Tuesday, December 5, 2000, at 5:10 a.m., the NYC Fire Department notified Central Communications that there was a water main break in the intersection of Foster and Nostrand Avenues, and that subway service at that location was affected since the Transit Authority was bypassing it's Newkirk Station. DEP personnel responded, were on location at 5:25 a.m. and found a heavy flow of water pushing up through a pavement repair in that intersection. The Fire Department, Police Department and Transit Authority were on location and the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management were en route. Keyspan, Verizon and Con Edison were notified and responded. The DEP crew initiated a shutdown on the 20 inch water main in Nostrand Avenue between Foster and Flatbush Avenues. The water was shut off at 8:00 a.m.. Approximately fifty residential consumers and Public School 296 were affected; however, the crew was able to make a temporary connection and provide water to the school. The Transit Authority was able to restore normal subway service since the shutdown was only due to street icing near the station. The failed section of the 20 inch main was replaced by DEP's emergency contractor and water was restored at 6:30 p.m. on December 5. Final street restoration will be complete by December 15, 2000. Our contractor is maintaining traffic through the affected area.
