Riverside South Park - Sewer Leak Complaint West Side elected officials have complained to DEP about the Riverside South Park development area (bounded approximately by west 72nd Street and west 66th Street). The complaints seem to indicate contamination from different sources. One complaint concerned oil contamination from the former Penn Central Railroad yard which was being recovered under the auspices of the NYSDEC. Another complaint states that sewage was entering the ground water which was under recovery operations and present in the future park environs. The department inspected the area and tested the recovered water. Small amounts of sewage were detected but there is no cause to consider it the result of a leaking sewer main or other large source (It is possible that the contamination is from Canada geese which make the area their, home). At the time of our investigation we also sampled storm water connections to the Riverside South development to search for illegal sanitary connections. The samples yielded a presence of sewage in the storm flow. Further inspection with the building management, Trump New World Project Mgmt. Ltd., revealed that some units had been misconnected to the storm system. DEP issued two Commissioner's orders to remedy the condition on November 13th and the management has taken steps to comply. We will be performing follow-up inspections. However, to date there are no indications that there is now, or ever was, any sewage flowing to the surface in the proposed park land.

Emergency Response

Water Main Break - Brighton 8th Street and Neptune Avenue; Brooklyn At 5:21 a.m. Thursday morning, November 16th , the Fire Department reported a possible water main break in the intersection of Brighton 8th Street and Neptune Avenue. DEP personnel responded, were on location at 5:43 a.m. and found considerable flooding and roadway damage with a heavy flow of water emanating from a broken 8 inch water main in Brighton 8th Street. The Fire Department was on location and Brighton 8th Street was closed to traffic. The water main in Brighton 8th Street was shutdown between Neptune and Banner Avenues. The water was off at 6:05 a.m. and approximately two hundred residential consumers were affected. Due to considerable roadway damage and undermining, it was decided to call the emergency repair contractor to replace the damaged section of water main and restore the roadway pavement. The site was turned over to the contractor at 9:00 a.m. The water main was repaired and water service was restored at 12 noon, temporary pavement was installed and the roadway was opened to traffic; however, permanent reconstruction of the damaged roadway will take an additional two weeks.

Twelve Inch Water Main Break - West End Avenue North of 66th Street (Manhattan) The emergency repair contractor is restoring the roadway that was undermined when the twelve inch water main in West End Avenue at 66th Street failed. Traffic delays are minimal and restoration work should be completed by November 30, 2000.
