DEP HazMat responders took the samples to DEP's lab at 40 Worth Street where they were analyzed and later confirmed positive for asbestos. A Commissioner's Order was given to NYU for en asbestos cleanup of the impacted areas. NYU, with the help of Con Edison, hired Con Edison's asbestos contractor to perform the cleanup requirements as outlined by the HazMat supervisor on the scene. In addition to LaGuardia Place, the NYU Library and a dozen or so vehicles within the fallout zone were also ordered cleaned. This was done solely as a precautionary measure to protect the public since no asbestos containing debris were found on the vehicles. Also, an adjacent building was tested for asbestos as a result of a community resident's complaint. All samples taken from that building were negative for asbestos. Six people with complaints of throat irritation. headache and ringing in the ears were taken to the hospital and released. In all, 70 people were decontaminated, which is standard operating procedure for anyone who might have contact with asbestos in the hot zone (the area determined to contain asbestos fibers). The majority of decontaminated individuals were members of the Fire Department. Others decontaminated at the site were Police Department and DEP personnel as well as thy construction workers who were present at the time of the explosion. The cleanup continued until approximately 7:30 pa at which time Washington Square South was opened to itatfia LaGuardia Place remained closed and was turned over to DOT for their determination of needed road repairs. Water Main Break Bruckner Boulevard This morning a 12 inch water main broke under the southbound lanes of Bruckner Boulevard. When the DEP catch basin truck responded to the site the roadway, which was undermined by the break, collapsed. No one was hurt and the DEP repair crews along with our emergency contractor responded to the site. Work at the site was delayed due to the proximity of an exposed gas main and high voltage feeder cables to the body of our catch basin truck in the collapsed section of the roadway. Con Edison was notified and worked with DEP to close the gas main, and elecrtical service to cables, so the catch basin truck could be removed and work could commence. Traffic on Bruckner Boulevard was diverted around the break location and delays were minimal due to the holiday weekend. No consumers were affected by the watermain shutdown.

Water Main Leak Affecting Museum of Modern Art; Manhattan Early Tuesday morning, August 29, 2000, the Museum of Modem Art on West 53rd Street and 5th Avenue reported that a water leak was infiltrating through a ceiling in a basement room used to store finned paintings. The Leak Detection Unit was called to the location and determined that a leak on a twelve inch valve was the source of the water affecting the museum. Department forces made repairs and no art work was damaged.

Water Leak Affecting Steam Line 401 West 22nd Street; Manhattan At 12:11 am. on August 29, 2000, Central Communications received a report of a water leak affecting a Con Edison steam main at 401 West 22nd Street. Department forces closed a curb valve on a nix inch fire service line at the above location and the leak stopped. The Fire Department and Con Edison were on location and the building owner was ordered to make repairs.
