Water Leak In Harding Park; Bronx In the Bronx, DEP staff assisted the maintenance staff at Harding Park, a private community, in locating a water service which is scheduled to be decommissioned and then abandoned. The service that was leaking is a section that is no longer a necessary part of the water supply to that community. Damaged Water Main -- Murray Street; Queens On Tuesday afternoon, August 29, 2000 a contractor installing a catch basin on Murray Street, north of Northern Boulevard, pulled the tap to an old abandoned service line off a twenty inch water main. DEP staff responded to the site and shut down the twenty inch main and plugged the tap hole, The water main was back in service at 9 p.m. No consumers were affected. Discharged into the Hutchinson River On Wednesday August 30th the DEP contractor working on the Hutchinson River CSO Storage Conduit drilled into our Conner Street Pump Station Force Main. DEP staff responded and the Pump Station was shutdown. Sewerage was diverted to the Co-Op City North Pump Station. DEP's emergency contractor responded and repaired the damaged force main. gallons of sewerage was discharged into the Hutchinson River Approximately 13,200 through the storm sewer system. Sludge Vessel Removedfrom Servicefor Emergency Repairs On August 241", one of NYCDEP's larger sludge vessels, the MN Newtown Creek, suffered a main engine failure. The vessel was en route to Wards Island carrying a load of sludge from another plant The engine was shut down and the vessel reached its berth under reduced power. Our in-house marine staff determined that the engine required bearing replacement as opposed to shaft work which would have required dry docking of the vessel. Marine staff was thus able to complete the necessary repairs to the engine bearing and other associated parts. The vessel underwent fitness testing, and was returned to service on the 30"'. The Department maintains backup for incidents of this nature, and made use of both a smaller sludge vessel, the MN Owls Head, and a sludge barge to ensure sludge production at treatment plants would not be interrupted.

Re•englneering/Planning

Plans to Bring Surface Water into All Parts ofJamatea Service Territory On August 24, an internal meeting was held between the upstate and downstate water supply Bureau's to discuss plans to bring upstate strrmce water into all parts of the Jamaica service teriftoty. There th an area in Queens (approximately 164th Street east to Francis Lewis Blvd, and Hillside Ave south to Jamaica Ave) where upstate surface water was presently unavailable. Possible remedies discussed Include 1) bringing 20-inch trunk mains up from South Conduit and across from Sutphin Blvd to the area, 2) bringing a 48-inch main (actual size be to determined) to the area, and 3) installing regulator valves to allow Douglaston water to be brought into the area without excessive pressure. It was decided that option k 1, with a 2-year time table, was the most feasible. That option is to be formalized into the Capital Construction Program. .
