Reservoir Operations: Mobile Chlorination Unit On Thursday, July 27, 2000 during one of our routine water sampling procedures, it was determined that there was no chlorine residual in some of the samples at Clark Avenue and Amber Street in Staten Island. The chlorine residual acts as a bactericide - The Mobile Chlorination Unit was sent to the location where chlorine was injected into the distribution system to an acceptable residual level. This area had experienced poor water circulation in the distribution system in the past so staff are reviewing the system in order to make adjustments to the flow patterns in the area to prevent a reoccurrence.

Local Law 65/96 Notifications and Notices of Violations (NOIrJ: Citywide In order to insure greater compliance to Local Law 65/96, DEP has asked the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) to provide complete information regarding all sanitary and combined sewers built since 1996. This information will be compared to the data currently on file at DEP to insure all homeowners have connected their premises to these sewers.

Community Service DEP recently completed its summer activities with a Washington Heights youth group, known as Fresh Youth Initiatives. The young people enrolled io this program perform a variety of service related projects in this northern Manhattan community. DEP has conducted a fire hydrant painting program with this organization for the past three years. This year, sixteen youngsters received instruction on the mechanics of the fire hydrant, the different types of hydrants, painting lessons, supplies and a lecture on fire hydrant safety. Other program components included an explanation of DEP's water analysis techniques at a water sampling station, a tour of the North River Water Pollution Control Plant, a visit to the water testing labs. In the coming weeks, Fresh Youth Initiatives will forward to DEP a list of the hydrants that have been painted and those that require repair work.
