Department of Environmental Protection Projects and Initiatives

Project Title Description Start or Announcement Date

Water Filtration •. DEP will begin construction of a water Construction Start Plant under Mosholu filtration plant at Mosholu Golf Driving Range June/July 2001 Golf Course in order to meet water quality mandates for its Croton Water Supply.

• Current projected cost is $720 million.

Urban Watershed • Cleaning up and improving New York Construction Start at Program City's Waterfront. One of the most difficult Alley Creek problems in the nation is finding a cost August/September effective solution to dealing with combined 2001; sewer overflows (New York and New Jersey have hundreds). These CSOs can contribute to severe water quality problems and make if unpleasant or impossible to boat, swim, or live near the water. DEP is developing a quality of life improvement program which it believes may be a model for the country for large cities just as our upstate watershed program was. This is a long range program potentially stretching over 20 years and involving hundreds of millions of dollars though it will be less costly than alternatives previously contemplated to meet federal regulations. In many cases these projects will not only improve water quality in streams, lakes, and inlets, but have other visible amenities such as new ballfields or wetlands.

• Parts of this program are the Flushing Bay CSO retention tanks ($232 million") and Alley Creek/Oakland Lake ($140 million) and Gowanus Canal improvements (DEP) and dredging (Army Corps of Engineers). Another project is a combined sewer overflow project to be placed south of 177" Street on the Bronx River. This will allow for the development of a "Greenway" on the River.
