Air sample collection and analysis was performed in accordance with the procedures described in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 7400 method for the determination of airborne fiber levels, excerpted from the Fourth Edition of the NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods, August 1994.
A known volume of air was drawn through a mixed cellulose ester filter mounted in a 25mm, three-piece electrically conductive cassette. Air sampling pump flow rates were verified before and after sampling with calibrated fl ow meters. Field blanks were submitted at the rate of 10% of the total number of samples collected during the work shift, or two samples, whichever amount was greater.
Analysis of the air samples was performed at Ambient Group, Inc. (NYSDOH ELAP 1111732). The sample filter was rendered transparent by the Acetone/Triacetin method and analyzed under positive Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM). The microscope used employed a Bertrand lens and a Walton Beckett graticule and was calibrated with an HSE/NPL calibration slide.
Airborne fibers were counted in accordance with the "A" Rules of the NIOSH 7400 method. Fiber concentration was calculated as the quotient of the fiber count divided by the volume of air sampled.
