On Friday. September 28e, and Monday, October l , 2001, burning odors or smoke odors from
the World Trade Center site were reported in the area surrounding the site and specifically inside the Red
Room of the American Stock Exchange. The management team of the American Stock Exchange
requested that air samples be collected in the Red Room because of odors. Polynuclear aromatic
hydrocarbons (PAHs) were collected because PAHs are proditwo4 through combustion of fuels, found in
fuels, plastics, and other building components. Acetaladehyde was also added to the PAHs because it is
xortned during combustion. PAHs samples were collected from $ areas in the Red Room to represent the
air space. The PAHs in air results are presented in the tables below.
