ICS 201 Summary of Current Actions Updated as of 1600, 3/15/02

0 STATEN ISLAND LANDFILL (DEANGELIS)

Sampling and wash operations continue. Building 6 area is completely demobed and the 11.5 acres has been posi-shelled. Efforts are underway by the USACOE to develop a schedule for demob of the landfill. Tetra Tech will start conducting the air sampling for metals once a week, with the analytical continuing to be done by the REAC lab.

o DISPOSAL (TOUW)

Auxiliary Chiller Room Oil Tanks - On March 14th, excavation reached the auxiliary chiller room. The remaining chiller units are expected to be removed between March 15- 17, and ERRS has scheduled vac trucks to be on-site on March 18th to pump out the two 2500 gallon oil storage tanks located in that area. The tanks each appear to be about half full, and their containment areas also contain oil.

WTC4 Oil Spill - On March 11th, a grappler working in the remains of WTC #4 punctured a 500 gallon diesel oil tank, releasing about half its contents into the surrounding excavation. EPA was notified, and ERRS responded with sorbent materials, and also pumped out most of the remaining oil in the tank. ERRS continued to collect and replace the oiled sorbent throughout the week. On March 14th, under the supervision of EPA and NYSDEC, the tank was removed from the excavation area, and ERRS recovered the residual oil in the tank. Oil-contaminated soil was segregated and staged for examination by recovery personnel. Once the contaminated soil has been screened, it will be loaded in a roll-off for proper disposal.

B-6 Level Emergency Generators - Debris removal in the area surrounding the 3 remaining generators is expected to take place during the week of March 18th. Tully, one of the prime contractors on site, will provide personnel to drain the oil from the generators before they are removed. EPA will oversee the work and provide absorbent materials, technical assistance and support to address any oils that may spill during the recovery process.

According to a NYSDEC tank registration, there may be a 1080 galln tank remaining in the vicinity of the generator room, which remains inaccessible at this time. Blueprints also indicate that another 10,000 gallon tank may exist nearby, as well as an additional two tanks of smaller quantities. Debris removal is actively taking place in this area, and these additional tanks may be uncovered at any time.

Stillwell & Gladding Laboratory, 130 Cedar Street - ERRS has completed the overpacking of the majority of the materials in the 8'*’ floor laboratory into containers and drums. The building owner has informed EPA that elevator service may be restored within the next ten days, which will facilitate the removal of the materials from the building for disposal.

General Activities - As of March 14th, EPA has not been notified of a schedule for re
