Re: Automobile Asbestos
Contamination Investigation
Vehicle Tag # 01345
Dear Mr. Barthel:
Per your request. Health & Safety Services, Inc. provided the services of an EPA7AHERA
Licensed Asbestos Building Inspector to determine the extent of contamination of a car that has
been subject to suspect asbestos containing debris.
Two types of samples were collected from the automobile:
A bulk sample was collected from under the hood of the car adjacent to the cowl. The sample
was collected using 40 CFR 763 protocols and were analyzed utilizing Polarized Light
Microscopy techniques by NVLAP approved laboratories. Upon analysis of the sample, asbestos
was detected above the regulatory limit of I % by weight.
A Transmission Electron Microscopy Microvacuum Dust sample was collected from the back seat
of the car. The sample was collected using a 25-mm diameter MCE filter contained in a three-
piece standard TEM AHERA air cassette with a one inch piece of tubing attached to the face cap
as a nozzle. The end of the nozzle is cut at a 45° angle. The cassette is connected to a personal
sampling pump with flexible tubing and calibrated at 2 liters per minute. The area to be sampled
is then vacuumed for 2 minutes, or until there is no visible dust remaining in the sampling area. At
the end of sampling, the cassette is turned upward before shutting off the power to the pump.
The nozzle is plugged and the cassette end sealed with an end plug. The assembly is appropriately
packaged to prevent separation of the nozzle from the cassette and sealed in a plastic bag. The
sample was analyzed for the presence of asbestos with the use of a Transmission Electron
Microscope. Asbestos was detected and the type is consistent with the material found under the
hood of the car.
