Re: Limited dust, bulk and ambient area air sampling for asbestos at New Stuyvesant HS (M477)

Dear Mr. Orlan:

At your request, ATC Associates, Inc. representatives Mr. Andreas C. Andreou (NYC-DEP asbestos investigator #82683 & NYS-DOL asbestos inspector / air sampling technician certificate #AH 93-18603) and Mr. Yiannis Efstathiou (NYC-DEP asbestos investigator #82244 & NYS-DOL asbestos inspector / air sampling teclmician certificate #AH 96-10905) visited New Stuyvesant HS (M477) located at 345 Chambers Street, New York, NY 10007 on September 21“, 2001. The purpose of the site visit was to perform a dust and ambient area air sampling to be analyzed for asbestos content on the 9“’, 10“’ and 11“’ floors of the school building and bulk sampling of the floor debris on the Southeast side roof as per your request.

As per your request, a total of forty (40) dust samples, using 3M scotch tape and a glass slide, and fifteen (15) ambient area air samples were collected throughout the 9*, 10“’ and 11“’ floors of the school building. Also, three (3) floor debris bulk samples were collected from the Southeast roof.

Also as per your request, all fifteen (15) ambient area air samples were analyzed utilizing Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Analytical results indicated that none of the collected ambient area air samples contain any asbestos structures. See attached laboratory report and results.

All forty (40) collected dust samples and the three (3) bulk samples were analyzed utilizing Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM).

Analytical results indicated that only three (3) out of the collected forty (40) dust samples contain asbestos fibers. The Inrec (3) samples found to contain chrysotile asbestos fibers were collected from the following locations:
