PART III - EXECUTION -A. All pipe shall be carefully examined for defects and no pipe known to be defective shall be laid. If any pipe is found to be broken or defective after being laid, it shall be removed and replaced by sound pipe without additional pay ment. B. Joint surfaces shall be protected from damage and shall be carefully examined before jointing. No damaged joint shall be used in the work. C. In laying pipe, it shall be carefully lowered into place by crane or other approved means. Just prior to lowering the pipes, the surfaces of the joint rings shall be wiped clean and the joint rings and rubber gasket shall be liberally lubricated with an approved type of vegetable oil soap. The spigot end, with the gasket placed in the groove, shall be entered into the bell of the pipe already laid making sure that both pipes are properly aligned. The pipe is then forced "home" by automatic equipment or come-along. Before the joint is fully "home", the position of the gasket in the joint shall be determined by means of a suitable feeler gauge supplied by the pipe, manufacturer. If the gasket is found not to be in the proper position the pipes shall be separated and the damaged gasket replaced. In its final position, the joint between tho pipes shall not be open at any point, more than the pipe manufacturer’s recommended distance. D. When the pipes have been jointed a cloth band shall be fast ened around the joint recess and a 1:2 mortar grout poured to fill the recess beneath the cliith band in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Prefabricated joint protectors may be used as an alternative to mortaring the outside of the joints. If such protectors are used they shall be made from a high density polyether, polyurethane foam containing at least the equivalent of 9 bags per cubic yard of unhydrated Portland Cement. The protectors shall be of suitable cross section ro fully protect the joint rings and shall be suppli‘/d in the form of continous rings.
