APPENDIX I

WTC DISASTER EMERGENCY

VISITOR SAFETY AND HEALTH ORIENTATION

We are providing the following personal protective equipment (PPE) for your safety and health while you are visiting the WTC Disaster Emergency area. Please wear this PPE at all times during your visit.

Your PPE consists of a hard hat, safety glasses, and a dust mask.

Dust, smoke and nuisance level airborne particulate may be present in the impacted areas. Be aware that these exposures can cause problems and should be minimized or prevented for some “sensitive” populations including:

• Infants and children • The elderly • Those who are immune-compromised (people undergoing chemotherapy or with HIV infections or liver disease, etc.) • Pregnant women • People with allergies and asthma

We have laid out a safe route for your visit. Please keep together as a group and follow the designated route. Do not stray off into areas that heave equipment and haul trucks are working. Watch out for overhead loads.

If a FDNY Fireman, NYPD Police Officer, or a National Guardsman approaches you, please comply with any and all instructions.

The emergency signals on this controlled site are:

• Three (3) repeated short blasts from an air horn or siren means immediately stop and evacuate the area as instructed. • One (1) long and two (2) short blasts from an air horn or siren means return to work or the area. • One long blast from an air horn or siren means immediate stop and remain silent.

If any one of these three occur during your visit, please follow all instructions from FDNY, NYPD, National Guard or a Site ES&H Professional wearing a yellow vest and red hard hat.

Hand washing is required after touring debris-covered areas and before eating, drinking, and smoking or touching facial areas.

By following all of the above instructions, your visit to the site will be a safe one.
