City Delays Returning Cars Contaminated By WTC Attack

Cars towed from Lower Manhattan after the World Trade Center attack will reportedly not be returned to their owners Monday as originally planned.
The Daily News reports that the city has decided not to release the cars over continued concerns of asbestos contamination.
Owners have been fighting for months, including threatening a class action lawsuit, to get back hundreds of cars that the city moved to Fresh Kills Landfill from the quarantined area around the World Trade Center site immediately following the terror attack.
The Daily News says that a dust coating still on the cars contains as much as three percent asbestos, more than three times the level allowed under federal cleanup rules.
The paper says officials from the Environmental Protection Agency and the city will meet this week to discuss what to do with the cars.
Originally, owners and insurance companies were told they could pick up their cars starting on March 18 and would be given instructions on how to clean the asbestos.
A coalition of public health advocates told the News that owners should not be asked or trusted to clean the vehicles themselves.
