Residential/Commercial Indoor Cleaning and Sampling

The sampling and cleanup of residences may be needed at certain locations. EPA is still waiting to hear estimates from New York City Agencies on the total number of buildings that may need interior abatement. At this time, EPA is estimating that up to 5000 residences may require cleanup and sampling. This estimate is approximately 45% of the 11,000 residences identified in a 10-block radius of the WTC. Cleanup of the interiors of the building will proceed according to lessons learned above. Chemicals of concern will be developed with the assistance of the advisory/peer review group based on information collected to date.

4) Communications Clearinghouse/Outreach Efforts

a) Establish an Office (Clearinghouse) to Respond to Community Concerns

EPA and its federal, state and local partners have completed an extensive amount of communication and outreach activities in response to the collapse of the WTC. Each of the Agencies has provided information through web sites, press releases, and community meetings. However, the WTC was an unprecedented event and there is a requirement to extend our outreach activities to instill confidence and to ensure the public that regulatory Agencies are taking the proper steps to protect human health. As a first step, a location (e.g., trailer, rental space) will be established and staffed daily with multi­ agency support for lower Manhattan citizens to visit and ask questions about clean up and sampling.
