01 SUMMARY OF WORK

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01 SUMMARY OF AREA CONTAMINATION

A. The accumulation of dust was the result of the destruction and collapse of the World Trade Center towers on September 11,2001. Dust and pulverized building construction debris penetrated the building through openings in the building’s exterior facade. The dust, contaminated with various contaminants including, but not necessarily limited to, heavy metals and asbestos, is present throughout 114 Liberty Street.

B. Initial sampling conducted by Ambient Group in June of 2002, revealed that various contaminants were present at detectable levels in the dust, including the following:

1. Asbestos fibers:

2. Dioxins and furans; and

3. Various metals, including, but not limited to, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel and zinc;

C. Mold growth has been Identified on certain porous materials, particularly underneath the hardwood flooring on the north side of the building, from the top floor down to the basement level, as a result of water damage following the WTC attacks. Damage to the building fagade, from falling debris, left the building open to the elements. In addition, water damage within the building occurred as a result of penetrations in the roofing system due to falling debris.

1.02 PROJECT/WORK IDENTIFICATION:

A. The Project name is Removal of Dust, Debris and Contaminated Materials at 114 Liberty Street, New York, NY as shown on Design Documents dated December 17, 2002 as prepared by Ambient Group, Inc.

B. The Work includes cleanup and disposal of all contaminated dust from the demised premises on each floor, including core and shell building improvements, of 114 Liberty Street.

C. It is the intent of this project to remove the aforementioned dust, debris and contaminated materials (including furnishings) from the demised tenant premises and demolish and remove tenant improvements and betterments and base-building furnishes, including but not limited to HVAC units and associated duct work, carpeting, gypsum wall and ceiling board, exposed hardwood flooring, pipe insulation, spray-on fireproofing etc. The Contractor shall begin abatement work starting on the top floor and working down. The sequence of abatement on each floor is as follows:

1. Building of centrally located personal and waste decontamination units;

2. Installation of isolation barriers over windows, doors, ceiling penetrations, etc. using two layers of 6-mil polyethylene sheeting and sealed with tape, as well as protecting the floor with two layers of 6-mil reinforced polyethylene sheeting and sealed with tape; 2 © AMBIENT GROUP, INC.-2002 SUMMARY OF WORK
