Surface dust samples were collected acco: ding to fee method S755-9S puUishad by the American Society of Testing and Maieriah (ASTM) This involves drawing dust from a surface area of 100 square eealimetera cm a ‘0.S 'micron mixed, cellulose ____ 1 ester Alter, The ._ _ _ dust was collected usmg a personal sampl tag pump operated at 2 liters per minute. The filter IS analyzed by trasisroission eloewsn microscopy for asbestos fibers. All of fee samites were shipped overnight and anal; ^ed by lATL.

The World Trade Censer tower buildings 1 and 2 bad asbestos containing fine proofing on the scructutsl steel on some of fee floors. This consisted primarily of chrysotile asbestos. Asbestos fibers are recognized as a bum^ carcinogen, which primarily affect fee respiratory system. The types of cancer associated with asbestos exposure include lung cancer, pleural mesothelioma and psritorteat mesothelioma. Asbestos can also cause asbestosis, a debilitating I'espira.tory dise^e. The latency period between exposure to asbestos and development of disease is i 3 to 25 years. The principle route of exposure to asbestos is through inhalation.
