EPA has assumed key implementation roles in the residential cleanup activities, the confirmation building cleanup study, the background study and the identification of contaminants of potential concern for indoor environments from the WTC attack. NYCDEP has assumed the exterior building roof and facade cleanup activities and the uncleaned, unoccupied building cleanups. Yet our respective staffs have supported each other’s efforts throughout.
You may recall that we jointly made assurances to FEMA that we would not have a duplication of activities, and consistent with this belief, you submitted a funding request to FEMA that outlined our joint responsibilities for implementation of this important initiative. While we may need to adjust this documentation from time to time, I think it reflects our mutual cooperation and responsibilities for the cleanup related actions.
I am pleased that EPA was able to effectuate a good resolution with the Red Cross, I look forward to our continued efforts to complete this important cleanup program as another key step in the recovery of lower Manhattan. Thank you for your offer of assistance.
