An«riyt)e«t Precodure for Postjeldes^CBe In Seii
Extracfion Procedure
The soil samples were extracted by Ute Soxhlet method. A thirty gnim aliquot was spiked with a surrogate soluKon
eonsistins of tetmchloro-m-xylene and dccficldorobiphenyl, mixed with .10 g anhydrous eodinm sulfate and
eoctncied for 16 hours with 300 niL of hcxane/iicetone (1:1). Tito c.xhact was concentrated to SmL.
Gbs Chropnatographio Analysis
The c.xtmct was analyzed for pcsiicidc/PCas using sixnuiUneoiiB dual column injections. The analysis was done on
an HF rtgpo GC/eCD system equipped wltlt an HP S8do tiutomatlc sampler. The systems wore eontroned with an
HF'ChemStation. The followng conditions wore employed;
Firet Column DB-r.OR, .50 meter, 0.32 jltiti fused silicn
ostpillary, 11.50 mnfllm thickness
Second Cohinu) Rls-ClPesticides, 30 meter, 0.32 inm fiiiscd silica
capiliarv, 0.50 tun film Uucknes-s
Injector Tempennure 200-C
Detector Tempcmiwrc .W’C
Temperature Progrom I2O"C for 1 minute
O'-'C/roiii to 2»5'“C, Itold for 10 minutes
InjecUon Voluirie 1 pL
The ges chroiStHiographs ware caUbratod using S pesticide standards at 20. SU, 100. 200, and 500 ue<b. The results
front each mixture were used to calculate Uic response factor (RF, of each analyte and the average RF was used in
ealculate die cuncuntration of pesticide in the sjample. QuHntiffcation was based on i he column (sigtiol i )
and the identity of the analyte was cenfirtned using the Rtx-CLPcsticidos column (signa) 2). A fingerprinT
chromatogram was run using each of the seven Aroclor nuxiiiTcs and toxaphane; the calibration curves were run
only if o particular PCB or toxaphene wore found in the sample.
