Open space areas include indoor as well as outdoor public areas. The Master Plan for Battery Park City, allocated 30 percent of the area to open space uses—^mainly public parks, plazas, and the Hudson River Esplanade.

Table 3-11 summarizes privately-owned public spaces, including plazas associated with buildings (New York City Department of City Planning 2000). Battery Park, City Hall Park, and Trinity Church cemetery have landmark status of historical significance. Table 3-12 summarizes larger public spaces that are parks located in Manhattan Community District 1 and part of Community District 3 (NYC DCP 2000).
