WNV Serosurvey Completed On October 10 the Department announced that the door-to-door WNV survey of households on Staten Island which began October 3, was completed ahead of schedule, on Sunday, October 8. The survey, which was conducted by the Health Department and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), obtained samples from a total of 877 voluntary participants in 634 households in randomly selected neighborhoods on Staten Island. Participants in the survey are scheduled to receive their individual WNV test results within the next three months. Further analysis of survey data will be conducted by the Health Department and CDC, and results will be made available to the public within the next six months, once the analysis is complete.

Information gained from this survey will help to determine the percentage of people on Staten Island who may have been exposed to the virus, which individuals might be most at risk for being exposed to mosquitoes infected with WNV, and what symptoms, if any, were experienced by people who were exposed to the virus, but were not aware that they were infected.
