The event aims to enhance community awareness about asthma and asthma management. Through sports and games, the event will also boost children's awareness of their physical abilities and skills. In addition, children and parents will ' learn about asthma through hands-on activities, and creative exhibits. In 1999, more than 400 children, parents, and local medical providers participated. Activities are open to all children (with asthma or without asthma) between the ages of 4 and 14 years old, who live or attend school in the communities of Hunts Point or Mott Haven/Longwood.

Proposed Amendment to the Health Code The Department has prepared a Certificate of Necessity to amend some lead-related sections of the Health Code. The proposed resolution was presented to the Board of Health in September and a public hearing is scheduled for November. The amendments are being proposed to clarify blood lead test reporting requirements and to create a childhood lead test registry that will be accessible to health care providers. The registry will assure the continuing confidentiality of lead test records. It is also proposed that the safety standards be amended to authorize the Department to charge a fee for issuing Dust Wipe Sampling Course certificates to persons who attend non-Department training courses.

New Audit The City Comptroller has announced a management audit of the Center for Animal Care and Control (CACC). The letter of notification to the Commissioner was dated September 26, 2000. The audit will include an evaluation of the CACC's compliance with its contract with DOH. Auditors will be reviewing shelter and adoption standards and practices. The Entrance Conference is being arranged for late October.
