West Nile Virus Activities , On October 4 the Department announced that a 37 year-old Staten Island man has tested positive .for West Nile virus. The individual, who lives in Bulls Head, Staten Island, was admitted to the hospital on September 27 with encephalitis, after having experienced symptoms including headache, muscle weakness, and joint pain for several weeks. He was released from the hospital on October 1, and is at home recovering.
As of October 7, a total of 13 people have been diagnosed with West Nile virus in New York City in 2000, ten of whom are residents of Staten Island. Two others are residents of Brooklyn and one is a Queens resident. Twelve of those diagnosed with West Nile virus are recovering at home while two Brooklyn residents remain in the hospital, including an 87 year-old Borough Park woman who remains in a coma.
Between March 9 and October 10, the Department's 24-hour automated West Nile Virus information line received 110,969 telephone inquiries. Of that total, 17,431 have chosen to speak to an operator. The operator option became available on July 17.
