Positive Sample for E.coli On September 27,2000 a water sample analysis from a water station located at Francis Lewis in Boulevard and 90th Avenue in Queens showed positive for one colony of E.coli. Although not itself a problem, such a sample may indicate the'existence of additional pathogens in the water supply system; since this was a second sample from the same location reflecting a potential problem, a third sample was immediately scheduled and a variety of preventative measures inflated: a valve survey of the area to ensure that no areas could be stagnated, low velocity hydrant flushing; and additional chlorination to boost disinfection.

If a third compliance test showed a positive, NYC and NYSDOH might determine that public notice was required or, in severe circumstances, require boil water notices house to house. This is only the of 1994. third compliance sample (our of 62,000 samples) that has been required since November (The first was in June 1997; the second in March 1998). Fortunately, all results on the third sample were negative and no further action is now required other than additional checking for cross connections to determine the possible cause of positive sample.

12 Inch Water Main Break • Neptune Avenue and West 24th Street (Brooklyn) water At 5:18 a.m., Tuesday, September 26, 2000 the NYC Fire Department reported a possible West 24th Street in Brooklyn. DEP personnel main break in the intersection of Neptune Avenue and responded, were on location at 5:38 a.m., and found considerable flooding in Neptune Avenue between West 24 and West 25 Streets. A heavy flow of water was emanating from a broken 12 inch Emergency water main. The Police Department, Fire Department and the Mayor's Office of Management were on location and provided emergency assistance. The Police Department diverted traffic around the break and DEP personnel initiated a shutdown on the 12 inch main in Neptune Avenue that extended from West 22nd to West 24th Streets. The water was shut off at 5:55 a.m., and fifteen one family homes were affected. DEP personnel replaced the failed section of pipe and restored water service Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. Due to considerable roadway damage and undermining it was decided to have the emergency repair contractor restore the roadway. The site was turned over to the contractor and the roadway restoration should be completed next week. Since there have been several breaks over the last few years in this general area, DEP is anxious to can complete a capital renovation plan for the area. The problem of whether any portion of Seagate be included in the stormwater control plan has delayed our completion of the plan.

Pumping Operations -Mosholu Pumping Station p.m, on A Consolidated Edison power outage shut down the Mosholu Pumping Station at 2:55 requested of Wednesday, September 13, 2000. A flow reduction from 40 MOD to 25 MGD was upstate. The excess water was diverted into the North Basin of the Jerome Reservoir which was was back on line being drained. Power was restored the following evening at 6:30 p.m. The Station by 7:00 p.m. and the higher flowrate was resumed by 7:30 p.m.
