Re: Turbidity Rates and Chemical Additions to the Water Supply

Due to heavy rains and attendant runoff in the watershed during December 2000, water quality has shown an increase in turbidity levels. To avoid violations of state codes and, more importantly, violations of the filtration avoidance requirements, DEP has requested and received, from both NYS Dept. Of Health and NYSDEC, permission to add alum into the Catskill Water Supply. The addition of alum acts as a flocculent and assists in the settling-out process. As of Wednesday, January 10th, the turbidity levels have stabilized. We will continue adding alum until we're convinced that the levels are trending down.

I have attached our letters of request and the the State's approval letters for your information.
