NYC 9/11 Public Portal Document

September 24, 2001 Deputy Mayor Robert M. Harding City Hall New York, NY 10007

Re: World Trade Center Memorial

Dear Deputy Mayor Harding: I am writing to urge the administration to take steps now to preserve a portion of the exterior facade of the south tower of the World Trade Center for possible future use in a memorial to the victims of the attack. Although design of any memorial will take considerable time and care, it is important to preserve some portions of the original facade before total demolition of the site in the event it is decided in the future to incorporate a piece of the original building in a memorial. The Art Commission is concerned that the nature and number of any future memorials on this site and throughout the city be carefully considered. We stand ready to work with other city and state agencies to ensure that new construction on the WTC site be of the highest quality, and that any memorials be appropriate and sensitive to the memory of those who died. I will call you to discuss how we may work together on this important endeavor. Sincerely,

jean Parker Phifer, AIA President cc. John Dyson
