Re: Asbestos Air Quality Sampling at: River Watch 70 Battery Place New York, New York 10280

Dear Mr. Sal Panico:

Enviro Techniques, Inc. conducted air quality sampling at the above referenced building.

All samples were collected and analyzed by NIOSH 7400 method using Phase Contrast Microscopy. Airborne asbestos fibers were collected on millipore type AA mixed cellulose ester fiber filters with a diameter of 25mm and a pore size of 0.8 µm. The filters were housed in three stage plastic cassettes and connected by Tygon tubing to portable air sampling pumps. The top piece of each cassette was removed during sampling, providing the open faced collection called for by the NIOSH method. This provides an even distribution of fibers on to the filters.

Precision portable air sampling pumps were used for sample collection. The make and models of these high volume pumps are Speedaire 4Z791, Speedaire 4X792, Gast 1531-1070-G288X, Dawson and Allegro equivalents. These pumps operate at flow rates between 5.0 and 16.0 liters per minute. All pumps are calibrated at the beginning and the end of each sampling period using a precision rotometer which is calibrated against a primary standard in our laboratory. Following sampling, the samples were analyzed using Phase Contrast Microscopy. The non analyzed portion of the filter was archived at our laboratory.

The NIOSH 7400 method does not distinguish asbestos fibers from other airborne fibers. The criteria specified in the method for counting fibers are size and length to width ratio. Under this methodology all fibers which meet these criteria are counted to determine the concentration of airborne contaminants. The results achieved by this method represent the concentrations of all airborne fibers above a certain size.
