Re: 40 Fulton Street
Gentlemen:
In response to your request of February 15, 2002 for information regarding any environmental hazard
assessment(s), subsequent remediation, and air monitoring, the following information is provided.
Ambient Group, Inc. was retained by Vornado Realty to perform an assessment of the building
following the collapse of the World Trade Centers. The initial survey was performed on September
15, 2001 and included airborne dust characterization and analysis of settled and bulk dust samples for
the presence of asbestos.
Settled dust samples were collected from various locations on floors 6, 11, 20, 26, and 29 and
analyzed for the absence/presence of asbestos. No asbestos was detected in any of the samples. Bulk
samples were also collected of debris from the roof of the building, the air filter on the 29t1i floor
HVAC unit, and from the central staircase on the 17th floor, and analyzed for the absence/presence of
asbestos. Trace (<1%) amounts of asbestos were detected in the sample from the 17th floor, and no
asbestos was detected in the fan unit filter material. Analysis of the debris on the roof revealed that
greater than 1% of asbestos was present. Based upon our recommendations, the building
subsequently washed down the affected areas thereby eliminating the debris from those locations.
Air samples were collected from various locations on floors I, 6, 1 1, 17 and 28 and analyzed for dust
characterization. The samples were composed primarily of gravel road dust, carbon particles, cement
dust, fungal spores and skin fragments. In addition, no asbestos was detected in any of the air
samples.
Finally, Ambient Group, Inc. continues to perform air quality testing at this building, on a monthly
basis and all results have thus far been found to be within any applicable guidelines. If you have any
questions regarding this information, do not hesitate to contact our office.
Sincerely. •
