> € On May 11, our environmental consultant reported > that the first round of sampling found unacceptably high > levels of asbestos in the window tracks of all 6 apartments > tested. Subsequent testing in a sampling of apartments at 40 > Harrison St. and 80 North Moore St. has found similar > results, indicating that many, if not all, of our old > windows contain asbestos. > € During the first two rounds of testing, the > consultant sampled the window tracks only for asbestos. > They also took samples from a few surfaces of apartment > interiors for mercury and heavy metals. Some apartments > were found to have high levels of one or more of these > substances of concern on surfaces that don't get cleaned > very often - like the tops of bookcases. > € For the final round of testing on May 20, our > consultants took samples from window tracks for mercury and > heavy metals, in addition to asbestos. Those tests found > unacceptable levels of one or more of these substances in > the window tracks of all 5 apartments tested. > € On May 13, The environmental committee sent the > first test results to a second environmental expert -- an > industrial hygienist at the New York Committee for > Occupational Safety, who promptly confirmed that the results > present serious safety concerns. > € On May 17, the TA environmental committee hand- > delivered a letter, approved by TA president Neil Fabricant > and signed by vice-president Diane Lapson, to Stellar > Management, informing them of the findings of our > environmental consultant. > € Stellar responded promptly with a cessation of the > project until the scientific facts can be verified, the > dangers to tenants can be evaluated, and necessary > precautions can be taken to protect tenants from adverse > health effects. To this end, Stellar has hired its own > environmental expert. > € On Monday, June 7, members of the IPNTA > environmental committee and three of our environmental > consultant's personnel will meet with representatives of > Stellar Management, their environmental consultant, and > their architect, to discuss possible solutions to the > problem we face. We are assured that the matter will be > dealt with as expeditiously as possible.
