asbestos info
The standards that are in place for evaluating asbestos exposure, and
the data we have relied on, are based on the best scientific research
and methodologies available. All standard methodologies have been
relied on to determine levels of airborne asbestos and fibrous
material. Many of the samples collected to date have been analyzed
using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). TEM is considered to
be the definitive state-of-the-art method for identifying asbestos
fibers. The outdoor air results reported on the EPA web site have
been analyzed by TEM and are being compared to the standard set by
the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). The exposure
standards set by AHERA were established to provide clearance for
schools.
Rescue workers, who may have prolonged exposure to high levels of
particulate matter that may include asbestos, must lower their
exposure risks by wearing respiratory protection. The levels of
airborne asbestos detected beyond the restricted work zone, however,
do not warrant the use of respiratory protection.
This last paragraph needs work:
It is expected and has been shown by the data collected to date that
any asbestos exposure to the general public would be to low levels.
Additionally, it is expected that any exposures to the general public
would be of a short duration and would not likely result in any
long-term health risk.
